Tobacco Treatment Specialist Workshops

This virtual program emphasizes obtaining the fundamental knowledge and skills relevant to understanding the addictive nature of tobacco use, its impact on health, and key clinical activities for assessing and treating the nicotine dependent individual. A unique aspect of this program is that clinical skills are taught using the ACT Center Tobacco Treatment Program. This includes a manualized approach based on years of testing and experience. Manuals include the participant, therapist, and program manual. Each designed to offer the needed resources to both clinician and client.

This program was designed to provide the necessary content and experiences for attendees to achieve the competency standards for TTS as set forth by the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD). This program is fully accredited by the Council on Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP).

Education and Experience Prerequisites:

Consistent with requirements for the Certified Professional by the American Heart Association (CPAHA).

• Associate degree level of education or higher
• Recommended study focus areas in social/humanities

Additional Supportive Documents and Criteria:

• Credentials documenting educational background (photocopy acceptable)
• Tobacco-free for at least six months

Fee includes:

• Program manual containing all slides, forms, and exercises
• Clinical Reference Guide
• Therapist manual, participant manual, and clinical forms
• Certificate of completion
• TTS training program evaluation access for one year (three attempts)

The ACT Center is funded by an appropriation from the Mississippi State Legislature, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and a grant from the Mississippi State Department of Health (Office of Tobacco Control)

Three components are necessary to complete the ACT Center program:

• Meet one of the education/experience eligibility requirements
• Complete the TTS training program
• Pass the ACT Center TTS Training Program Evaluation with a minimums core of 70%

Certified Professional by the American Heart Association – Tobacco Treatment

The new CPAHA-Tobacco Treatment credential was launched October 2024! This was developed as a joint effort between the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD).

We encourage all prior and new trainees to apply for this National Certification. It is of value for several reasons, including:

• It is the only currently available and fully operational TTS Certification. It is backed by the AHA, one of the best-known and respected healthcare organizations, and endorsed nationally and internationally by organizations and professional societies
• ATTUD, the largest tobacco practitioner-based professional organization, fully supports this credential
• It is renewable on a 3-year cycle
• Ongoing efforts are geared towards improving billing for services for Tobacco Treatment Specialists

Obtaining the CPAHA-Tobacco Treatment credential

Application requirements include (a) an Associate’s level of education or higher, and (b) successfully completing a CTTTP-accredited TTS Training Program (such as the ACT Center TTS Program).

The final requirement involves passing the national examination.
